Voters Organize for Election
Hearing
( Providence , Rhode Island , USA ) The newly
formed Ward 8 Neighborhood Action Committee is supporting a complaint
by Wilbur W. Jennings Jr. scheduled for a hearing with the Board of Elections
this Wednesday.
People who interfere in elections count on our being apathetic to
succeed, Laurie Griffith, an 8th ward activist told the
group. They should consider this due notice
that they can no longer depend on that. We should
be allowed to have people run from our own ward, not the Mayors
friends she said.
People have been calling the Mayors
actions interference, said Hillary Joyce who hosted the
meeting. They were incensed that he encouraged
a candidate to move to this ward only days before the filing date, and then
endorsed him over our own candidates who live here, then provided logistical
support and the use of his campaign headquarters and his own city hall
staff. They see this as a blatant attempt for
the Mayor to exert direct control on our ward.
Wilbur Jennings, the candidate who filed the complaint said, Whose
interests will Tejada represent if the election is
confirmed? Will it be the needs of people here
in the Ward or Mayor Cicilline whose support and people got him
elected? What will we do when we need to fight
city hall?
The interest is primarily because voters are upset that the Mayor is
trying to get into a position to dictate to us, said Hillary Joyce
summed up after the meeting. We have people
here from the Latino community and other minorities who have come forward
to complain. This is clearly not a racially motivated
meeting.
An update meeting will be tonight at 17 Wildwood Avenue .
