Candidate Questions Voting Machines
Filings made today in RI Supreme Court

(Providence, Rhode Island, USA)  “The R.I. State Board of Elections has essentially ratified ballot stuffing and denial of counting of votes duly made, because of mistakes by optical scanning machines, and election officials . . . ,“ Attorney Keven A. McKenna wrote in a brief to the Rhode Island Supreme Court today.   McKenna represents Wilbur W. Jennings in the 8th ward Providence Council race where only a handful of votes separate Jennings from Leon Tejada.

McKenna filed the papers today, and in a statement said, “The Supreme Court will be serving all concerned if it will address the statutory deficiencies with optical scanning.”

"This current process encourages ballot stuffing and lack of proper vote accounting,” McKenna said.  “From a statutory point of view, too many checks and balances have been eliminated for the sake of computer efficiency.  Can you just imagine if these problems arose on November 7th?”

Jennings is not alone in his complaint.  Ward 8 neighborhood activists have organized, and some have already testified to the Rhode Island Board of Elections of specific incidents voter fraud that the Board has referred to the State Police.

The group has also complained publicly that Mayor Cicilline has improperly interfered in the 8th ward election.   Cicilline endorsed and promoted his chosen candidate, Leon Tajeda from ward 9, who registered a change in his voting address to the 8th ward just before the deadline.  He also lent the use of his campaign headquarters, his phone bank, and personnel.    Ward 8 residents claim this is just one of the wards in Cicilline’s plan of control of the city council, and will hamper their resistance to a city school being built on a hazardous chemical dump site.

The group has been joined in speaking out against the election by other city council candidates from the 8th ward democratic primary election who finished behind Jennings.
